Asian decorating is an umbrella term for a style that covers a variety of oriental ethnic regions, including Japan, China, Vietnam and Thailand, just to name a few. Its origins date back thousands of years and its emphasis is essentially based on mysterious and mystic symbolism, combined with exotic imagery. Whatever your preference, one common element is central to the Asian Style, and that is the importance of blending a sense of harmony, balance and placement with every element of your room, while at the same time providing comfort and functionality. Asian decor is generally characterised by it's rich minimalism, whereby the room should not be overpowered by too many Asian accents. Less is often more with this style!

Chinese decorating achieves a perfectly balanced tantalizing beauty made up of bold colours such as red, yellow, green and purple, vibrant patterns and textured objects placed against dark carved wooden furniture with hand painted details, or high gloss lacquered surfaces. Include accessories that have dramatic style, featuring materials such as porcelain, stone, ivory and jade in objects such as ginger jars, large vases and pots that have complex patterns, dragons and animal motifs. Folding Screens, lanterns to define ambiance, stone fountains, bamboo accents and Chinese wall decor are all fundamental to this style, whilst elaborate patterns and colours in rugs and fabrics provide a highly lavish combination of symmetry and design.

Japanese decorating has a calming, Zen-like mood which is achieved by using natural materials and subdued earth tones of brown, black, green, grey and tan dominating. Walls are generally neutral, stone statues and water features are grey, furniture, architecture and trim in shades of brown and lacquered black, whilst red and green are often used as accents in ceramics, lighting, fabrics and accessories. Bamboo stone, rice paper and natural fibres feature in furniture, pots, wall panels and mats, and soft floral patterns and colours are incorporated in pottery and embellished textiles. The simple lines and curves of furniture serve to emphasize the minimal, with only the absolutely necessary put on display. Each element is selected and placed to provide balance, space and contrast with the overall interior-serenity cannot be achieved where there is clutter.
